HELENA FIGURE SKATING CLUB 2024-2025 VOLUNTEER POLICY
Helena Figure Skating Club (HFSC) is a 501 C (3) Non- Profit Organization with a Board of Trustees and a membership of skaters, families and volunteers. The organization relies heavily on fundraising efforts to continue operation, specifically ice rental. The HFSC club rents ice from the Helena Ice Arena for skaters to take lessons, practice programs and to train at all levels in the sport of figure skating. The necessity of club ice rentals allows skaters to train competitively and safely train programs and take lessons with certified instructors. The rental of ice guarantees skaters the time needed to progress in the sport.
Each season the HFSC runs fundraising events like ice shows, competitions and various fundraisers. The HFSC also commits to volunteer hours with the Helena Bighorn Hockey Club in exchange for the profits from a special jersey auction. The special jersey auction profited $9000 last season. The events and hockey agreement subsidize rising ice rental costs. With ice costs continuing to rise, the needs of our club expanding and the volunteer hours growing the HFSC has adopted a volunteer policy to accompany the membership of each of our member families.
By registering for the 2024-2025 membership season you are committing to volunteering:
1) Three hours of your time to a HFSC event (aka events)
a) Events included but are not limited to; winter ice show, spring ice show & competition/testing.
b) Dates of events will be announced at least one month in advance.
2) For three Helena Bighorn hockey games for the 2024-2025 season (aka games)
a) The duration of time varies and is dictated by Helena Bighorn owners and management.
b) Dates and times will be announced by the Helena Bighorn Hockey Club and shared with membership as soon at the schedule is made public.
c) Examples from the previous season include: taking tickets/ stamping hands, taking tickets for cash and card payments, verifying tickets for VIP room guests and durations ranged from 1.5 hours to 3 hours. All volunteer positions come with and basic on the job training and support and can be executed once training is complete.
3) Fulfillment of Volunteer Hours Requires:
i) signing up for volunteer time for events and games
ii) arriving on time for registered times for events and games
iii) staying for the duration of volunteer commitment for events and games (or until dismissed)
iv) meeting minimum age requirement of volunteers- age 12
v) additional requests that fall within the scope of the agreement with the Helena Bighorns Hockey Club and/or HFSC that qualify as necessary to complete a volunteer task
The 2024-2025 Volunteer Policy applies to each family joining HFSC. The 2024-2025 Volunteer policy does not apply to each specific member at this time. The volunteer policy is designed to help support the volunteer hours that are needed, but it will not cover the nearly 300 volunteer hours that need to be filled each season. This policy is a minimum commitment and will in no way cover all the volunteer hours needed to gain funds to keep our skaters on the ice. The policy will only lighten the load on each member so we can continue to purchase ice and provide an essential to our members.
Volunteer Need-To-Knows:
Staffed on Time
We are required to have our volunteers confirm the Tuesday of each week before the weekend games. I have to give the names of our volunteers to the Helena Bighorn Game Day Manager by Tuesday each game week. Please sign up early so we can be compliant.
Staffed Appropriately
Volunteers need to be able to successfully operate several iPhone like devices. Training is provided and the tasks are repetitive.
Helena Bighorn Ownership requests that volunteers be 16 or older. As of right now, one of the four volunteers can be 12 or older.
Volunteers need to arrive on time and stay until dismissed.
Volunteers must arrive by 5:30pm unless otherwise posted.
Doors will be locked. Simply knock on the door to be let in.
Volunteers will meet in the lobby. A Helena Bighorn staff member will meet volunteers in the lobby shortly after 5:30pm to sort out shift assignments and provide training and answer questions.
Some shifts will end around the start of the 2nd period.
Staffing
Members can fulfill volunteer hours themselves or with the help of friends or family (as long as the meet the age and ability requirements above).
Members can work with other members to fulfill volunteer hours.
The 3-game volunteer requirement will NOT provide staffing or all games. We hope that if each member gives some then it will help lighten the load of those who work more time.
It is great exposure for our club and the Learn to Skate program!

How to create a profile and complete SafeSport Training for Volunteers
MembersOnly - Login (usfsaonline.org)
Select “Non Member Create Account” at the bottom of the screen.
The next screen will ask if you are a volunteer for foreign athlete- select “I am a Volunteer”
The following screens will walk you through standard questions needed to CREATE ACCOUNT
